  • Chris Mahlerbe, Vice President

Chris is a pack burro racer who lives on the Front Range with his wife Natalie and his children, Isabella, Megan and Aidan. For seven years, all four of them have raced their donkeys, Cash, Nash, Ben, and Donkers, that they adopted from Longhopes Donkey Rescue in Bennet, CO. His favorite part of pack burro racing is, “the chaos.” He loves the feeling of uncertainty and anticipation leading up to a big race coupled with the athleticism of trail running. Chris and his family plan to continue running their burros far into the future.

All throughout his life, Chris has loved large animals. Growing up in rural Ohio, he barrel raced horses through 4H and shadowed local large animal veterinarians. This passion eventually led him to receive a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University. He has been a large animal veterinarian for over 25 years. Chris currently practices in Northern Colorado and is based out of Greeley. Chris hopes this practical knowledge will help him enact his goal of supporting burro health as the Vice President of WPBA.

In 2019 Ellen read Running with Sherman and became involved in her first burro training run that same year. She officially started pack burro racing in 2020 with 2 races and quickly fell in love with the burros and the racing community. In 2021 she completed 8 races. 2022 was another great racing season as well. She hopes to continue racing as long as she can. Ellen lives in Denver with her husband Aaron.

As a newly elected board member, Ellen wants to give back to the burro community who has given her so much. She wants to encourage the growth of the sport and and make the WPBA the best organization for burros, burro racers and their supporters as it can be. Educating others that burros can live productive lives is another goal she has.
